Verna attended Calvin College (Grand Rapids, MI) and graduated with a focus on English and speech. As a secondary education teacher, she taught English, writing, and oral rhetoric. Always challenged to improve and enhance communication, she found that when objects are added to the mix, people listen. Verna used the discovery in devotionals published by Judson Press and in contributing to Vacation Bible School materials by Augsburg Press. Standard published her five books of object talks, and several of her skits for worship have been published by Drama Ministry. The skits were the result of directing many dramatic sketches to introduce her pastor’s sermons. Effectively illustrating Scripture verses chosen by the pastor provided a wealth of writing experience. She also enjoys teaching others how to use objects to illustrate in their writing.
For the past ten years, her passion has been directing Maranatha Christian Writers’ Conference, and she devoted her time to staffing and enabling growth. With new leadership now in place, she looks forward to having more time for personal projects. As an off-site business manager for her husband’s business, she has flexible time to write and travel. Seven grown children have given Frank and Verna seventeen wonderful grandchildren who are always resources for information and ideas.
